so this years GAAR just started,....early morning wake up call and a little undecided what will be with my old bird and the race,...still missing Urs with his help, support and all the good images, but he's on a trip somewhere in Africa....okay lets take off for this adventure at 05:00 LT and face to southeast... proud of being airborn after a long overhaul time.... sunrise from the cockpit.....and maybe one of you has seen the small pic of my daughter and her dog when she was a child , they are always with me on board.... gaining altitude as if there never had been a problem..... and the left engine is just running cool and even.....all systems are on the track for this years GAAR ;-) a well earned view.... after an hour or so....seems to have been a few minutes....the target in sight..... right downwind for runway 32, on ATC's order.... turning on final..... my working place for this month......cockpit's view as the runway is way to long I am on a good way to make a perfect timing over here.... well 0.01 difference is tolerable, don't you think??? lol..... parking position near the fuel station, although my plane is pretty full after this short ride....and no BBQ?!?!?! Urs, please help....or are the military personell abstinent? well....let's find out what they offer at this base.....when all this year's collegues are here there might be some kind of party anyway... :-)

Deltahotel, Please look after your DC-4 VH-EDA. I worked on her and flew on her for many many years in the 60s and 70s. Her name then was Norfolk Trader and she is a DC-4, not a converted C-54. It is great to see her in he rally.
Cheers Rob

leg 2 the rallye goes on with an easy line up and take off from Tindal.... the moon in the back and the sun in front.... just passed Bamyili airfield, an outpost in this outback easy approach to Ngukurr, a small spot in this vasteland at the Roper River landing on gravel within time limits.... taxiing to the parking place having to wait for Paul Amarant the Council Service Manager in his Cessna ready for departure no problem for us to take the "grass apron"...lol Paul's landcruiser is ready for a "town cruise".... here we stay and there he goes....see you soon and thanks for transportation!

Deltahotel,
VH-EDA was originally purchased from Western Airlines by ANA and entered the Australian registry as VH-ANF BCPA took her over in 1948 flying their Sydney to Vancouver route. She then entered Qantas service as VH-EBK then eventually became VH-EDA along with her sister ship VH-EDB. During my time with her she did wear your colour scheme for a short time then was repainted in an interim colour scheme for a few years, the a final colour scheme to match the Qantas 707s of the time, during this period she was also fitted with a radar nose. In 1970 she was on a charter flight with a full load of school children and suffered a nose gear up landing ending in a ditch beside the runway at Jacksons Field Port Moresby extensively damaging the nose area, the vertical stabilizer when they tried to pull her from the ditch and all four props. Myself and a crew flew to Jacksons to patch her up enough to ferry her back to Sydney for repairs with the landing gear locked down and at a greatly reduced airspeed. She was repaired in Sydney and returned to service until Qantas sold her to a Victorian company called Airexpress flying as a freighter between Melbourne and Hobart. She was then sold to the USA then Canada and flew till 1987, eventually landing short on a final approach putting the landing gear through the wings. After that she was written off and scrapped. A sad ending.
Cheers Rob

I am really admirative of the quality of the screenshots posted here. Congratulations, guys ! And the sceneries / textures / lights effects (ENB series, maybe ?) are really nice. Here are some shots of leg 2, from Tindal to Ngukurr. Lining up on Rwy 14 at Tindal Rotate Cruising at 13'500 ft - and not much to see down here The great Rick Piper's HS.748 fully functional VC cockpit In final for Rwy 11 at Ngukurr (had to make a low pass first to get all dingos, cassowaries, kangaroos and wombats out of the runway) Strong headwind here Oops, I forgot to feather my props Thanks for watching and see you further in the Australian bush, Raphael

Personally, I always try to have a story or link to my flights with events like this. When I last flew in 2011, I used an airplane that in the real world was a Bristol Freighter (just not with the VA I flew for) and used period correct sponsors for the fuel, oil, and other stuff on the side of the plane. To me, it adds not only to the storytelling and to the fun.
