The 2022 GAAR is now available for test flight and pilot registration with flights scheduled for April.
Piston-engined and turboprop aircraft first flown between 1903 and 1997 are eligible.
Further updates of files will follow.
Airfield, routes and flights for FS9, FSX, P3D and XPlane will be available from mid March.
Test flight information is available. FS9, FSX P3D and X-Plane files are available to download to simplify setting up the test flights.

No weather is being loaded by the X-Plane situation files. Are we supposed to insert the weather manually for each flight?

For those using MSFS and need to know how to find the PRESET FOLDER for adding the WEATHER FILES here is the location Jerry (roster pilot 20) found after we did a lot of searching. We both have the Microsft box version so it may not work for everyone.
C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Weather\Presets
After locating this folder just copy/paste the ten weather files. Now you should be able to select the weather file at the World Map screen or after the FLY option using the TOOLKIT/CLOUD option. Happy Flying... Gunk

Hi Allan,
Under the Flight Plans section Normally the sector number would be clickable to print out the flight information as it was in the past. I am wondering if this is still in the works or are all of these flights this year straight shots with no intermediate touch & go's and we should just use the airport information sheet?
Thank you,

Hi Phil, Guilty as charged! It is on my todolist for this afternoon. The airport information sheet does contain most of the information apart from a few navaids for FS9/FSX but I will update the flightplan information sheets and get them on today. (SWMBO mustdo lists may trump my todo list...) For X-Plane weather, there is a youtube video that shows how to set various weather parameters at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHSdWoMxl7M . The most important parameters to set are the rain for three of the days and wind speed and direction for others. I just checked and realised that I had uploaded the wrong spreadsheet sheet for the weather. The original was a work in progress, the giveaway was the temperature showing 32F for every day! cheers, Allan

...For X-Plane weather, there is a youtube video that shows how to set various weather parameters... Normally the weather conditions are included in the X-Plane situation file. You just have to change your aircraft type, the rest (weather conditions and time of the day) will be set by the situation file. I have recompiled the situation files to include the weather, will just update to the latest spreadsheet data.

Another query. In the spreadsheet for the weather, a column "Cloud Alt" specifies a value, take 5.5-8k as an example at YTWB (2083ft airport elevation). Altitude refers to the height of an object above sea level. Thus, one should expect enter cloud flying through about 5500ft or about 3400ft above ground level (5500'-2083').
In a METAR the figure of 5500 will mean cloud base at 5500ft above the airport elevation (2083ft for my example) meaning that one should expect enter cloud flying through about 7600ft.
The reason I ask this is because one enters the 'Altitude' of the clouds in X-Plane manual weather settings.
I assume that the values given for the clouds in the spreadsheet is Altitude (height above sea level).

It's all designed to blow your mind. I'm flying my MJ C-47 in P3D v5.3, and the published weather for each flight never seems to match up. Not a problem. We'll just fly on with whatever weather shows up for that particular flight.

Thanks Gents.
The updated X-Plane files provided by Johan are now in the link on the webpage. The flight descriptions for the first four legs are now linked. The rest are in MS Word and will be uploaded as I get the webpage conversion done today. It never seems to run as smoothly as I hope.
I have noticed differences in the weather displayed between different installations of the same sims that I have. as long as the wind is about the right strength and direction and the rain is similar we should be in the same ballpark.
I had more hair before I started working with computers.
Cheers, Allan

...It never seems to run as smoothly as I hope. Allan, I am part of the DC-3 World Rally planning team and know how many months, days and hours are put into trying to host a Rally successfully. Still, unforeseen mistakes will creep in. Thank you very much for your outstanding effort. The GAAR is always a success and a pleasure to fly the challenging series. I'm working on a program that will handle specific weather conditions easily in all flight simulators.

Confusion with leg 07... The MSFS flight plan 07 when entered into littlenavmap shows a distance of 176 nm; however, the roster for leg 07 shows a distance of 164.3 nm. My question is which is correct and which value was used to get the suggested target time for this leg?

Hello GUNK, I am one of the guys who created the MSFS files. Cees and I created the flightplans ingame and MSFS inserts extra waypoints: TIMECLIMB, TIMECRUIS, TIMEDSCNT and TIMEPAPROACH and the consequence is that the intial flightplan is no longer a straight line between YKOW and YMYI. If you delete these extra waypoints you get the distance which comes very close to the rally distance: 164 NM. If you go to the GAAR2022 start page and use the link "Time and Weather Summary" you get a table. And the 4th column gives the distances. For leg 07 the distance is 164.3 NM. And that is the official distance and that is the distance used to calculate the target time. So, as a conclusion, the MSFS flightplans available via the GAAR2022 downloads are a starting point. You can use them, but it is up to the pilot if he wants to change them. For my own flights I remove the TIMECLIMB etc waypoints and add the procedures I want to fly at departure and arrival. After that I adapt my cruising speed in LNM to get the same flighttime as the target time. That cruising speed is my yardstick for the groundspeed during the cruise phase. But during the flight there are always small differences so you have to adjust your speed a tiny bit now and than. And my own experience is that I am always on time on the TOD and the difference with the target time always creeps in during the arrival procedure. I hope this helps, and if not let me know,
Kind regards, Luuk

Thanks for the update... I have reviewed all ten flight plans and I verified your information... Good Job...however, to me this means that the flight plans for MSFS, as downloaded, are NOT to be used for time checks as they are presented. The TIME AND WEATHER SUMMARY distance should be used to get a straight line route to determine a target time. In earlier rallies (before MSFS) the downloaded flight plans did not contain these extra waypoints which did not cause this "confusion"... Thanks again. I will keep this in mind for future rallies which might have touch-and-go or full stop waypoints. Keep up the good work, Gunk

I used Active Sky XP to get historical weather from April 2021, after saving the situation I tested it with just X-Plane 11 to verify the situation had the same weather. I am not sure how that got left out. thinks Johan for fixing it.

The weather files for MSFS do not get loaded in my MSFS. I get the standard Snow / Storm etc..
I never get a list showing the 10 weather files?
