EARC Flight #20 WIPK (Dapati Amir) to WARR (Juanda)
Is it Christmas time? You can hardly feel it here, no fir trees, no snow and no gifts! Instead we have a long flight ahead of us! Let's tackle it!
"Especially dense cloud layers await you on your flight to Surabaya.. and thunderstorms are possible. I wish you a good flight." With these prospects the weatherman dismisses us. Thom and I look at each other and shrug our shoulders.
We can not change it!
Who flies first? The coin decides.. Thom flies first..
That's fine with me, so I still have time to organize!
It is getting worse with the smoke at engine start. Yes, the age is noticeable..
Take care of yourself, and no jokes with me in the air!! After all it is christmas! Do you hear?
There he goes..
The flight takes just under four hours, half of the route over the open sea!
I have sufficient fuel, I have tea, water and biscuit .. and I'm in good spirits!
Let's go!
Tail up.. accelerate, rotate..
A small left turn is enough and I'm on course..
.. to the coast..
.. and out to the "Karimata Strait".
It is about 100 miles to the west coast of the island "Belitung".
The "Karimata Strait" is a sound between the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, which connects the Java Sea with the South China Sea.
Absolutely super aviation weather.. thunderstorm? My foot!
An uninhabited island greets me halfway.
And then the west coast of the island of Belitung comes into view.
The island of Belitung was in the possession of the United Kingdom from 1812 until Britain ceded control of the island to the Netherlands in the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824.
Its main town is Tanjung Pandan.
Just after the city..
.. on course southeast. Like the neighbor island "Bangka", the island is known for its pepper, tin, clay, iron, ore and quartz sand. The island is also a producer of fishery products.
Hard to miss is the turquoise blue "Balok Bay" in the south of the island. The landscape always green and always wet. Especially in the monsoon season. The rainiest region of the island.
The south coast is also not to be missed..
Because from here, the long journey across the Java Sea leads to the north coast of the island of Java.
I almost believe that the weatherman in Depati Amir was right!
The first half is done! Everything goes without problems.. and no trace of Thom! Very kind of him!
.. except that my tea has become cold!
After almost two hours over water, the shoreline of the island of Java comes into view. I sing from the treetops!!
The island of Java is almost entirely volcanic in origin. Of course I hope to see one of these famous volcanoes!
Oh .. I'm even a little earlier on the coast than expected! My next checkpoint dead ahead!
I am a lucky guy! The cloud cover tears open.. The volcanoes "Merapi" and "Semerang" show up!
The city of Semarang. It has a developed seaport, since 1867 with railway connection, from which sugar, copra, tobacco, coffee and rubber are exported. There is also a significant fishing industry.
The history tells that as early as the 16th century, the Portuguese, English and Dutch had a dispute over the rule of the island around here. Anyway.. when Ross Smith flew to Surabaya, the Dutch were in power here. That makes me hope for a cold Dutch beer after landing. So in some 90 miles..
The city of Blora, my last waypoint before landing in Surabaya. It is located at the low land, in the interior of central Java, 127 kilometer East of Semarang.
My goal is almost in sight. I'm quite certain that Ross landed on the former Morokrembangan airfield, near the port of Surabaya. Of course you can not see any more of it today!
And once again.. time to descend.
Hazy outlook, but smoke clouds from field fires show me that I have wind from the east.. perfect. I know that the runway at Surabaya-Airfield has east-west direction..
Let's fly a straight-in approach!
The main rainy season is from December to March. The most precipitation falls in the period from January to March. During this time, the greatest sultriness prevails. Of course.. I caught a day like this!
A quick look at my toggle switches and instruments.. all set for the rest!
But..
.. never stand behind a landing plane that lands on a very dusty runway!
Thom has also made the leap across the Java Sea. Well done!
That was a long day! Flighttime: 3hr47min, fuel used: 245 gallons
Final position! Our aircrafts did very well so far and they get a small service with new engine oil and what belongs to it! Thom and I are looking for a cool drink.. Twee koude biertjes alstublieft!.. and Merry Christmas!
