Leg 9 – V C Bird Intl Antigua TAPA – TLPL St. Lucia/Hewanorra Intl after all these legs, this one seems to be one of my best as memories come up of my frequent sailing trips in these waters... Startup in Antigua and having some luggage of a St Lucian musician on board, who was very pleased to ship his stuff back on board of my DC3 after a concert in St.Johns. He'll fly back next week.... still some rain , but in the Caribbean its heavy, short and warm.... kind of emotional departure, as this rally ends in a few days Bye bye Antigua, .... sharp southern turn overflying the North Sound Marina with Crabbs Power Plant soon the island of Montserrat shows up right hand... we were here 1995 and just could watch activities from the Vulcano Soufriere Hills before the great eruptions occured in 1997 with 25 dead persons Gouadeloupe in sight Aeroport "Point a Pitre La Raizet", our departing harbour for another sailing trip... I could not resist making a short deviation and overfly Les Iles de Saintes where we had a stopover with our sailing boat to visit Fort Napoleon fort-napoleon.com/presentation-du-fort/we had a great time over there,...and last but not least: I love French baguettes.... on the left Maria Galante en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie-Galanteapproaching Dominica en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominicaon the east side "Douglas-Charles airport" turning west.... "Roseau-Canefield airport" and...leaving Dominicas airspace,...Martinique in sight.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MartiniqueMartinique's airport "Le Lamentin, Aime Cesaire"; another sailing boat trip departure... from the beginning on we had the rumour that a screwdriver could be left over in the engine gearbox ?!?!?! from maintainig the boat....well we found out that it was the truth... but that's another story,...anyway, we survived,...lol some tailwind is blowing us towards our final leg destination.... Saint Lucia passing the northern airport "George F.L. Charles",...and Buckeye Saint Lucia terminal buckeyeglobalmarine.com/project-view/st-lucia/soon we reach our destination approach.... turning on final Hewanorra Intl. airport in sight from our cockpit gliding down as on railroad tracks in fantastic timing... landing safe,..power off...flaring out.... touch down with a bit of residual moisture on the runway the rwy was long enough to have the clock being watched until the perfect target time....we took the last exit... taxying to the parking area with Caribbean music in our headsets.... another rather busy airport.... just professional guiding via radio.... parking in front of the terminal building is a real favour! just a few spectators who want to see an old Austrian bird..... that's it, for today.....deep sigh! the music stuff on the trolley and ready for some fun....cheers

Leg 8 – Terrance B Lettsome Intl Brit. Virgin Isl. TUPJ – TAPA V C Bird Intl Antigua well, we're ready to fly the next leg, doesn't seem like anyone else is interested as we left the Dominican Republic late so we are relatively late on the road... Except for this boy who really wants to see if our old bird would fly. the ground crew says goodbye to us with a friendly wave ... bye bye .... there is a song for everything ( bye bye blues ) these buddies on the bottom left are busy preparing their plane and don't even notice our departure. it doesn't matter we're busy with the controller on the radio anyway... here it seems to be really busy, which we can well understand since these islands are paradise.. the airfield scenery looks like it was designed by Urs...well...who knows....?! V1. Rotation. Take off among us the proof of a paradisiacal place in this world..... this really is a paradise.... and this is evidence of a wonderful bird from a bygone era in cruise mode we have enough time to ponder our thoughts when memories arise.... send me the pillow that you dream on (another song like that by Dean Martin, 70's LP Dino: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws07gxHnR1Y ) would be great if Urs could be here,...Ernie just left his seat and my thoughts are with my best friend..... He would drink a cup of tea and tell me his wonderful stories around the world.... anyway,...he'll always fly with me...and another song from Frankie: come fly with me...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmbVpBaXuCI&list=OLAK5uy_lJlcIZsggL1s7TDgGaeQDwJXpihUqjUuY approaching Antigua I remember a sailing trip maybe 30 years ago with my wife and a hand full of wonderful friends....English Harbour, Non Such Bay,....let me dream.... a short glimpse on the clocks,...everything fine for descent.... long final to TAPA - Vc Bird.... we are tense how this airport will be.... another smooth touch down in good timing.... Carribbean pure..... Antigua,...and if Urs could manage,...Swiss aircraft parked right up there.... stressless ground crew,...just a marvellous sight: the Swiss airplane and the Austrian DC 3 through this window.... professional handling and in my dreams,...we two arrive on planet dreamworld as it was yesterday.... cheers to all of you, and use the time as best you can....who knows what tomorrow will bring! we enjoy our time under the flag of Antigua....

Leg 7 – Eugenio Maria De Hostos Puerto Rico TJMZ – TUPJ Terrance B Lettsome Intl British Virgin Isl. a rainy day in Puerto Rico but nevertheless we have to continue.... the two propblades are making a whirlpool on the taxyway everything ready for departure.... a loooong spray behind our bird on acceleration to V1... rotate.... .....take off does not look so bad,...just a little shower as we leave this time we avoid high altitudes to reach a better timing... but its cloudy well,...you can't have all the advantages...but it seems to clear up and rain is steadily diminishing.... San Juan with its 350.000 inhabitants and underneath Rio Grande the far eastern shoreline with "Laguna Grande" we pass Isla de Culebra, an island, town and municipality of Puerto Rico and geographically part of the Spanish Virgin Islands. fair weather and in good mood we remember Urs and all his activities in the last ten years, we knew each other; he would have loved this trip!!!! in the far distance like a shining St.Thomas appears slowly.... and then ....The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, along with more than 50 other smaller islands and cays. About 16 of the islands are inhabited. The capital, Road Town, is on Tortola, the largest island, which is about 20 km (12 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide. The islands had a population of 28,054 at the 2010 Census, of whom 23,491 lived on Tortola; current estimates put the population at 37,000 (Wikipedia) the shores of Jost Van Dyke .... ...seem to be popular entering via Mount Healthy National Park on approaching Terrance B. Lettsome Airport underneath you see Parham Town and Fat Hogs Bay with two huge crusaders....( not my way of travelling..lol) steep turn above East End Bay and on final to TUPJ this time we made 99,9% target time.... wow,...seems to be a busy place.... well organized with a special parking area ....thats great !!! friendly marshalling and some interested spectators.... this would have been a perfect place with Urs and his BBQs...lol anyway,...he is always with us and our bird "Uhug" a night full of memories and stories with one or another beer is awaiting us....cheers!

leg 6 Maria Montez Dominican Rep MDBH – Eugenio Maria De Hostos Puerto Rico TJMZ
after a great time with my brother I have to leave to join the rally at last.... so back to the airport from Boca Chica and up into the sky.... a last farewell and a wink and a smile....see you again one sunny day!!! rapidly leaving the starting pattern and... climbing up high.... a last glimpse from my cockpit at the airport of Santo Domingo on the left and to the bay of Boca Chica, where may brother lives the same as an outside view in this altitude we have an enormous tailwind so the island of Hispaniola / Dom.Rep. is just rushing by and we see the last point of Punta Cana on the left.... incredibly fast we approach Puerto Rico and we really have trouble not to overshoot our target time.... our engines are at the lowest power setting possible, before dropping from the sky... and we are on direct approach to Eugenio Maria De Hostos as slow as possible we flare towards the runway.... safe for landing and touch down next time we will not fly as high as today,...its nearly impossible to hold the target time with more than 30 kts tailwind and we do not like to fly stupid 360's a fire fighter to the right on our taxying to the parking place.... friendly marshalling.... not bad .... this welcome.... blocks on touching Puerto Ricans ground for the first time.... Ernie still in the cokpit for cleaning while I pose for the friends at home with a huge smile

leg 04 Boscobel Jamaica MKBS-MTCA Les Cayes Haiti lazy afternoon startup,...should not be a great deal to fly to Haiti.... so far, so good,...easy take off,..and a last farewell to Jamaica.... passing Port Maria Bay,.....famous for Tacky's war.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacky%27s_Warsoon we reach cruising altitude and what we can see is incredible 30 kts. tailwind,...we have to reduce speed as much as possible as we otherwise undershoot our target time immensly still a wonderful flight and we safe as much fuel as never before....groundspeed is about 32 kts higher than IAS we pass the Navassa Island,...a wild area preserve without any real historical and geological meaning...but you know what had happened if someone would have found any important material there.... if interested......https://www.iwp.edu/articles/2021/02/10/navassa-americas-forgotten-caribbean-island/ still on 8500 ft alt and immense tailwind,...Hispaniola in sight ...the west end of Haiti we are pushed from behind above the clouds crossing the inbound mountains with Pic Macaya and.... ...diving into the plains of Les Cayes still with minimum power setup and still in time ahead.... full flaps gear down is all what we can do to decelerate....( besides a silly 360,..lol...) in the end we have to turn to final and remarke a changing wind direction towards us from the right,....seawind...tricky,.... quite a bit of crosswind.... as slow as possible and as safe as necessary and nose into the wind we "crab" to the grass runway "left" of us.... then correcting to the invisible centre line and touch down,....easy...lol... easy ? the clock is still ahead..... short, small airfield and GCAR authorities in a "tower camper".... small charming airfield.... like a "Fly in Restaurant,..or Bar" well, let's see what these people offer.... in good old French.... Bonsoir Messieurs-Dames...... my flight shadow always with me: Salut! Urs,...prenons une biere ou deux....

leg 03 Caiman Brac MWCB-MKBS Boscobel/Jamaica in the meantime, weather has changed, airtraffic has cleared too and we are waiting for pus/pull back... some minor discussion about cargo..... after a while,...cargo loaded, pull back....engines firing up.... what a nice Cub in front...must be fun to fly with.... The Piper J-3 Cub is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. With tandem (fore and aft) seating, it was intended for flight training but became one of the most popular and best-known light aircraft of all time. The Cub's simplicity, affordability and popularity invokes comparisons to the Ford Model T automobile. The aircraft's standard chrome yellow paint has come to be known as “Cub Yellow” or "Lock Haven Yellow". farewell to the Caimans..... ahhh the Virgin' Airliner is waiting for his slot....we have cleared for take off and are just short before lift off here we go,...and btw, the C130 is parked at the other runway end... whatever this could mean....(black money? ) were not here for such business, the rally has to go on soon the Caimans ar just a short grayish line far distant between sky and ocean... what can we tell ? just a calm steady flight with smooth running engines.... within good time we reach the Jamaican coast.... its not famous Montego Bay,..we are far more east "East Of The Sun And West Of The Moon" another jazz song.... approaching Boscobel/Jamaica on final... seems to be busy as well.... OMG,...this is unawayted crowded.... friendly marshalling....and a charming female customs officer....we don't need to talk,..better have a drink.... parking position lets have a look at this busy airfield, as customs clear our cargo bay....

Leg 02: Cienfuegos/Cuba MUCF-MWCB Gerrard Smith Intl/Brac Caiman bad weather, bad sight but good mood and anticipating "the Caimans" maybe finding some of the hidden money,..lol starting up taxi to runway,...tower said something of IFR situation?!?! okay, we don't wait just let's go,..."bad transmission"... well there's a lot of spray behind our bird,...but who cares "behind" clear for takeoff? well,...must have been...the tower just said something very native Spanish..... sounded like: "merda"?!?!...who knows??? maybe "good luck"... last glimpse back to Cienfuegos and Cuba... what about sight of earth?,......soon we will only see water....anyway water,...all around.... sometimes not only just rain,...the caribbean underneath smooth running engines and radiocontact to Charles Kirkconnell Intl Airport ?!?!?!MWCB thats correct, but the name?!?! oh, well, in 2012 they changed the name as we hear due to "Sir Captain Charles KC" whoever this man is/was,...hopefully we will see something of his airfield in this laundrymaschine.......otherwise lets install some floats.... I think within the last seconds before touchdown-possibility the mist clears up a little,..... cause only via navigation...?!?!?! no landing possible... deep sigh "very deep sigh"...runway lights.... very short turn to final full flaps steep down just perfect on the papi flaring out.... touch down,...pfffffffffff seems to be Intl indeed,...well,...we lost some seconds due to airfield search,..but not to bad.... a little close, but not "to close for comfort" ( another song... ) parking spot identified,...all groundcrew is busy,...okay...let's open a beer by ourselves....Cheers Urs! you see, we're just on the way to the next BBQ.....see ya!
