Leg 2, Crotone to Naples Descending past the crater of Vesuvius in the driving rain. Not a good evening for sightseeing. Inbound to Capodichino in the gloom. Vesuvius safely behind us. Rolling out on the wet runway. Vesuvius looks on, unimpressed. Safely parked on the ramp, but it's still raining and Vesuvius is still there.

Running a little late, but I made it across the "pond" to Palermo and I'm ready to go. I'm not "stuck" in Spain like Thom is but I wish I was. The food and wine there is superb. I just refueled my Howard 500 and fixin' to taxi out. See y'all in Crotone!!

Second one without major cloud cover! Turning base runway 06 LIRN Roll out! Getting my helper to set the chocks! Dang, he does good work! Now get back in here with my coffee and doughnuts helper!

I've just finished Leg 01 of GEAR2021; a nice scenic flight over Sicily. I would like to share my navigation method of this flight with the others. Beside using the NDB Punta Raisi (PRS) with a range of 38nm and the VORDME Reggio Calabria (RCA) also with a range of 38nm, I divided the distance between PRS and RCA in parts of 10 nm because of the "radio gap" between the 38nm of PRS and the 38 nm of RCA. To navigate, I use the radials of VORDME Catania (CAT) and during flight preparation I noted the distance from CAT to the course to fly from PRS to RCA. I also calculated the GS for every part of the 10 nm during flight preparation, taken TAS (120), wind direction (West South West) and wind strength (5.2 kts) into account. So during flight, every 10 miles I tuned to the respective radial of CAT, checked my VOR when the respective radial was crrossed and checked at that moment the distance between my course line and CAT on my DME gauge. In this way I can ascentain every 10 nm if my A/C is on the right course and on time during the distance of the "radio gap". See attachment. But I've a problem. After loading the wx file of this flight, FSX indicates the (correct) wind of 247/5 to be taken into account. However during flight the wind speed in FSX increased to 17 knts!. So I was forced to correct my speed regurlarly during flight. In the are of arrival the wind in FSX was 257/5 again. This puzzles me. Has one of you who the same experience and what can one do about it? Pilot 007 Cees Attachments:

Hi Cees,
You may have stumbled on where FSX uses the "gust wind speed" input. Possibly it is a randomised variation of wind speed along the route.
Cheers, Allan

well, I've worked hard to being able to leave Spain and have arranged my this years bird, my DC3 with Austrian registration. I see that you are already flying the first legs, so by now I am able to join you soon.... here some screenies as always......( I know, Urs would have been the perfect story teller, but he will be with us anyway!) this was taken a few months ago, when Urs was on vacation with me in Mallorca, the biggest of Balearic Islands, where I have a small appartement.... so this is on the same spot,...right now.... startup and let's fly away here we go, from the small airfield from Villa Franca Bonani Urs is checking the instruments!!! airborn,...west a short "Salud" to my appartement..... and leaving the Island,....about 3-4 hours, depending from headwinds....then Palermo will be in sight.... I've "decorated" the doors in memory of my good friend! on the left: Menorca,..the smaller island.... water...................... it's to foggy, to have a look at the Sardine Island, the Italien carribbean.... at last,...after 3 and a half hour....the south west corner of Italy Appr. Palermo safe landing touch down parking at the gate..... see you soon, my fellows!

LEG1
well then, lets start with leg 1 and follow you from the last starting place..... it's been difficult for me, physical, emotional and technical; Urs is missing everywhere; but in the end I could manage all needs, as Urs would have done with a smile on his face and a cool : cheers! starting position and equipement on the left V1 rotate.... airborne fully concentrated, yet Urs on my mind..... Palermo "bye bye blues" ( there's a song for everything ) against sunrise and all systems : go after a while in thoughts and memories, smooth running engines, Etna is visible on the right side.... majestic and calm,...Etna.....but who knows....remember the volcano on the Canaries last weeks, just erupted without any announcement... street of Messina, leaving Sizily and "entering" Italians mainland WP1 Reggio di Calabria LICR slowly finding back to old memories and comfort in my bird.... and suddenly after some daydreams: Crotone,...first target of the GEAR 2021 after flying the usual landing pattern to RW 17 on long final with som headwind and a few crosswind gusts just doing fine on final.... and......touch down in really good timing... well Urs is watching the instruments,...lol what a difference,....no airport and GEAR scenery.... ( Urs could not help with this.... ) anyway,...short brake,...some sparkling water and a sandwich,...then we'll think of the next step! cheers to all of you, and thanks again for Urs' memory! see you soon....

LEG 2
after a short break, weather turned to moderated rainy, but I could not wait any longer, so started up again and flew to Naples.... not a very impressive run,...soon met the National Park of Sila with Lake Cecita nearby,...a huge water preserve.... sometimes along the coastlines and not only weather was damp and blue at last the Gulf of Sorrento,...I remember having started a sailing trip from here more or less thirty years ago,...I can tell you,...time is running....I think it was just yesterday....yeah: "Yesterdays" Jazz version,...not to be mixed up with Beatles Yesterday.... (there is a song for everything....) dizzy and gray....Naples just on the map in font of me.... the next volcano,...non the less important.... Mount Vesuvio turning right final RWY 06 cockpit view,...always a short glimpse to Urs ready for touch down and taxy along a lonely jetplane ........"Leaving In A Jetplane"....John Denver...RIP.....as well as Urs....) need to refuel my bird ....and my brain..... see you on my next leg.... have a good time folks ......

Here we are on Leg 03: Oh, shucky darns, the weather.wx files supplied with our flight plans, as interpreted by P3D, doesn't show all that rain that was forecasted. It has the wind, the cloud layers, and the visibility, but not the specific weather event, such as rain, snow, whatever. Oh well, we'll just have to struggle on with what we've got. We carefully reviewed the weather that we got for flight 03, and we found that we get headwinds above 6,000 feet MSL or so, and a slight tailwind component below 4,000 feet. We were able to use this to get our arrival time to within a minute or so of the target time. Cool! Seeya ATB

LEG3
my workingplace gets accustomed ..... leaving Naples and airborn to Siena let's see whats up there in middle of Italy.... from Campania and the Appenines to Abruzzo the hills are getting higher and form themselves to mountains... the Fucino plain,...visible from Satellites as a grean spot in the middle of Italy the west edge is the town of Avezzano... approaching WP 1 L'Aquila on the right wing you can see one of Italys highest mountains...2900m ASL ..."Gran Sasso"...the "huge stone" turning towards Umbria a lot of lakes,...natural and artifical ones..."Lago di Piediluco" a few minutes later : Lago di Corbara,...and in the background: famous touristic "Lago di Bolsena", a wonderful area! and in front starboard: "Lago die Trasimeno" The Battle of Lake Trasimene was fought when a Carthaginian force under Hannibal ambushed a Roman army commanded by Gaius Flaminius on 21 June 217 BC, during the Second Punic War. It took place on the north shore of Lake Trasimene, to the east of Cortona, and resulted in a heavy defeat for the Romans. btw: Hannibal was the guy, who crossed the Alps with a herd of elephants!!!! I crossed them last month twice on my Royal Enfield,...LOL back from the past we have entered Toscania.... turning downwind RWY 18 turning to base and final....RWY 18..... touch down a little late cause of strong headwinds on final.... taxi to a neat little airfield Siena / Ampugnano though, a little life here as the GEAR friends await us.... a little shower and a chilli wind does not decrease my joy to be here... a BBQ like in all the other GAARs??? maybe Urs was here....LOL engine shut down... have you seen the box of beer??? I am sure! Urs "IS" here!!!!! if you look really hard, I am sure you can find him !
