I always fly a landing pattern as that is factored in the time and just helps me get set up for a good landing at the right speed etc etc and as for take off, usually I take off, fly that heading till approx 1000' then turn back to the airport and get my fix then fly to the next checkpoint. Unless the next direction I need to go to is pretty close to the take off direction I will just continue straight after take off. And sometimes ..... when time is running out you just need to do a straight in approach and landing. Cheers and Beers Shorty

I really have same problem with time. First leg (1 sector) went quite fine (few minutes away from target time) but, for the second leg it was 18minutes... For third, 25... And I clearly connect it to aircraft performance. I use King Air 350 - I cannot fly with something slower, as I'm lacking time. And this aircraft climbs really fast - I did not mesure this, but I think less than 5 minutes, and I'm on my cruising altitute of 6000ft. Approach also goes quite fast - 200knts on initial apprach isn't anything unusual, ~130knts on approach and 110knts at touch down. For leg 3, target time gives me average speed of 140knts... I made it with average speed of 200knts... With cruise speed of 240knt, and excess of power... Damn, I have to try harder Fact, I'm not doing pattern always - If I can, I'm doing straight in approach. I will try to fly over airport, and join the pattern to use some extra time. Regards Grzegorz

Don't despair, keep at it. When you are constantly fast, and you have time, fly over the airport and then join the circuit, you can drag it out till your scheduled time by doing 1 min or 2 min legs in the pattern and that will burn up some of that extra time and you will not end up at the final destination with 20 min on the clock. I made it for leg 4. Just 3.5 minutes away from target - which is great improvement. Thanks Guys for hints! I know where I gain those three minutes in this leg. Let's check Leg 5 - it can be perfect Cheers Grzegorz.

How does everyone get so close to their Est. times? I am using 'Minute Markers', just as what we do in the real world Rally and Precision Flying. You have a target time at which you must arrive at the destination, so you plan your flight backwards. You then place the 'Minute Markers' on your map, that will be your timing. You fly to reach each marker on exactly the time specified, in the real world we aim for 1 second early/late at the most. This makes it much easier. I, for example, have a nominated speed of speed 150 kts GS... that is 2.5 nm/minute (150/60). Use the old E6B to calculate your Indicated Airspeed and use this as reference only. The rest you fly on depending where you are relative to a timing mark. If you are early, fly a bit slower, if you are late, fly faster. You will quickly get the hang of it, soon you will fly within a few seconds...

After much mucking about for 5 legs and not coming even close to my target times, I reached out to the community for help. I received replies from roggeberg22 and skmconnell and they imparted some experience and knowledge to me on how to get closer to the target times. So, I took their sage advice, pondered on it for a while, and then, starting with Leg #6, applied it.
The results…astonishing.
I have pictures but I can’t seem to figure out how to post more than (3) images.

Hello pacificflyer57, Good the read that you made astonishing progress with flying on time. Well done! Your question about the screenshots, is also something I had to find out some time ago. We follow similar paths. My solution is a free account on a platform called Imgur. Imgur is created to share images and short videos with "the world". After a leg I copy my screenshots to Imgur and these images are than available on a overview page. Then during the process of making your post you select the image you need by clicking on it. This click brings you to a kind of "link page"
On the right side of this "link page" you have a number of links in different formats, but all referencing the same image. The one you need for the posts of this rally are the "BBCode links". Simply press the "copy button" in Imgur, go to your post, position the cursor where you want the image, and press CTRL-V (Paste). That is it. When you create a post, you have a "BBCoce" tab at the bottom. When you shift to this tab, you will find the link to the image on Imgur somewhere between the text you typed. A link looks like this: "img src="https://i.imgur.com/ypzTiAo.jpg" style="max-width:100%;" I hope this helps. I left some details out in order to keep the focus on the main line. But if you need some extra tips, let me know.
Kind regards, Luuk Bakkum

I have now completed (ahead of schedule) my GAAR21 flights. I have participated in previous GAAR Rallies, but this year I had a major improvement: I have installed the OrbX Australia scenery. I only regret I have not done that for previous rallies, as I have seen a significant improvement over the P3D scenery. Also I have used ActiveSky with Cloud Art, set for Historical Weather for the flight date and time. I do not expect to use again the OrbX scenery in the near future, as I never fly to Australia, but it will be ready for next year GAAR!
Thanks to all who contributed to this Rally.
Regards,
Domingos

Hi Luuk, Thank you for the information about the Imgur program. I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my question. I will look into acquiring Imgur or a similar program for picture posting. Cheers! Gary Barns--- MEC0032

Maybe too late for this Rally, but a pdf file how I plan my Rally Flying. As we have a Take-off time and a target time, we can calculate the time of arrival. As we now know what time we need to land, we do our planning backwards, what I am trying to illustrate in this short document. The example is for flying my C-47 Dakota, with a nominated speed of 150 kts Groundspeed. Use your E6B to calculate your Indicated Airspeed to match your Ground speed at that altitude. Minute markers for Rally FlyingThis example uses LittleNavMap and the "Range Rings" to create the markers.

Hi Johan,
This is a beautifull piece of knowledge you are sharing! And very well described. May be too late for this rally but definitely not for rallies to come.
Kind regards, Luuk
