Whilst flying over Scotland, I have sought out an online radio station to set the proper music mood for the first four legs of the rally.

I have sent my registration last Monday, 8th. Until now I do not see my name on the roster. Is this normal?

Domingos

Domingos,
The roster has just been updated. We aim to have updates about every 3 days but I have been away for work since Monday morning. 13 hour days leave little room for other stuff!
Cheers, Allan

Thanks Allan! I was just in doubt that there could be anything wrong with my email. Everything is OK now. I will make my first flight soon.
Regards,
Domingos

I enjoyed the beautiful scenery during flight 3 (John O'Groats, Orkney islands, among which the real gem is HOY) but found it impossible to match the target time, because of the 2 touch & go at Westray and Papa Westray on 2 runways whose orientation require to fly a long "pattern". Here at least, it will be easier for the pilots flying a slow aircraft and allowing a sharp turn from Rwy 31 at EGEW to final for Rwy 36 at EGEP.
I flew as fast as possible after that and made a short final approach but still couldn't get in Scatsta on time...

Not being very competitive I am quite happy getting within a couple of minutes of the time. However the last two legs I have done I have been nearly bang on. I try to fly the legs as fast as reasonable to the estimated ground speed if not just above until the last leg then I can usually slow down. I find it easier to lose time than try to make it up.

I agree with you, Simon, when you "find it easier to lose time (at the end of the flight) than try to make it up" : we can always fly the descent at slow speed and perform a longer downwind. I'm just a bit curious to know about the approach time allowance or calculation, because when it comes to flying I like to respect regulations - and also at uncontrolled airfields.
Congratulations for flying very close to the target time on your 2 last legs ! Respecting schedule is one of the biggest challenge of Bluegrass Rallies, and I personally enjoy it. When I fly for myself, I don't mind this and concentrate on other aspects of the flight.

DC-3 Airways are running their World Rally for 2018 from November 1st to 21st. As this overlaps the SNAR dates we have extended the reporting dates for each of the November by a month to allow participation in both events. You will find the World Rally over at World Rally 2018Cheers, Allan

Well I have done my flights and have found it really enjoyable. The first two flights I did were fairly within a couple of minutes but I found if I stopped worrying about keeping to the target ground speed and just kept the aircraft at the MP and rpm settings I used on my trial/registration flight the times projected were very accurate. Thanks again for the time and effort put in to make this an enjoyable experience.

For next October we will be celebrating the centenary of the Great Air Race in 1919 from London to Darwin.
Some initial thoughts on options include:
1.) 10 legs of about 200nm at intervals along the original route for smaller prop planes 2.) 10 longer legs for large props/turboprops and jets to run in parallel 3.) A combination of the above with varying leg lengths for dual aircraft choice
There will be a commemorative race for electrical aircraft in 2019. We will keep an eye on how that develops to see if we can tie in. There's nothing as electrical as a sim!
Cheers, Allan
