Getting a head start GAAR 2018. Carrying a few members of my C-17 crew who will be passengers, switching at stops , allowing them to take in the local areas as they move to the next airport. Folding the gear and out of HOBART. Over the central hills of Flinders Island Roll out at Orbost.

Fellow Pilots! Very well then! In position at Hobart International Airport! The Testflights after assembling were successful, a certificate of airworthiness from the state of aircraft registry is available for both aircraft and for sufficient amusement, as you can see, is provided! Jazzthom is obviously not travelling light.. I wonder!

Leg #2 With all the Cargo those DC-3's are hauling,I better leave a liter or two of kerosen to light the Griils. Climbing out of ORBOST the heat an rain made me wish I left a little more fuel out of the tanks. Should have brought full military version with terrain following radar , some of those clouds are HARD inside. Safely down at Narrandera

Hey there, my friends! let's start up this event and show some pics as long as I have access to my camera equipement.... the customs authorities conviscated all my cameras temporarily cause of some housebraking nearby and they hope to find some enlightenment about the offenders ....( deep sigh ).... they tell me, Iam not allowed to put any pics into the network by the end of february..."that's the law".... ?!?!?! so just the two pics passed the authorities when I loaded all my packs and boxes for the flight and the one with Urs..... all the others have to wait for now.... I am really happy to have Urs at my side! It's always good -and safe - to have a good collegue with you! And yes, Erika my DC3 has a lot to carry, as I want to have enough "spareparts" for any unexpected failure.... cheers

Here some pictures about the first day in the GAAR 2018 – Flight leg one from Hobart up to Orbost via Flinders Island. Flightplan and other paper stuff has finaly been done and the petrol tanks are full! Jazzthom is an earlybird.. (without all his photo equipment - he has already left!) Starting #2 .. .. and checking all important functions and clocks! Not much air-traffic around, so I’m quickly airborn.. Heading north and passing Hobart-Cambridge-Airport.. Ha, remembers me..! Inbound to TTR-NDB and climbing up to 4500ft.. in the back the city of Hobart. Cheers! Shortly after.. clouds of smoke.. .. and forest fires! Not uncommon this time of year. Are you a keen journeyman..? then you are on the right spot here : Snaky Creek Forest! An absolute huge natural reserve. Old trees, birds and other creatures – even venomous ones! I prefer flying!! Approaching the north-east-coastline near Saint Helens NDB.. St Helens was first used as a whaling base in the early 19th century. When tin was discovered in the surrounding area in the 1870s, St Helens became the shipping port for the mines. Today the region is a popular resort for fishing, swimming and other aquatic activities. Near the Tasmanian northeasterly coastline.. .. and Musselroe Bay. Mildest weather, long white beaches and a hot spot for keen fisherman! Swan Island! Part of the island is privately owned, contains several houses and an airstrip!! Several shipwrecks have been recorded here of vessels passing through Banks Strait. Clarke Island with an interesting history.. .. and Cap Barren Island. The highest point on the island is Mount Munro at 715 metres. .. and finally Flinders Island in front of me! The island is the largest one in the Furneaux Group and it is locatet on 40° south, a zone known as the Roaring Forties! There would be a lot to discover here.. .. but I should concentrate upon landing! On short final runway 32 – wind calm! All in the greens, ready to land! .. precision landing! (Self-laudation...) Trainee pilot? or maybe he is deaf!! Unfortunately we cannot spend the night here.. .. the GAAR-Management has no compassion with pilots! Well, let's have a short brake!

After a short break, my journey continuous in direction Orbost. A 133nm flight over water, the Bass Strait. My decision: runway 23 for take off – in fact, a short runway in distance, but my TOW is low. Lets go! Reaching rotate-speed, gently pulling the plane off the ground.. .. and it flies! (Trimming the airplane to avoid muscle cramps...) Gear up, reducing MAP and RPM for climb.. .. and turning right, direct Orbost-Airport! Goobye Flinders Island.. .. hello Bass Strait! Travelling on 4500ft only, on my left the Inner- and Outer Islands. A paradise for seabirds, waders and sheep! Luckily the weather is nice and the sea is calm. But there are nightmarish stories about this waters here! The toilets are in the back! Some 16nm out of Orbost-Airport I start my descent.. .. down to 1100ft – direct left base for runway 25. Jazzthom states runway 25 vacated! OK, so then turning final 25 Cool! They have a PAPI installed to avoid some scratches on the belly! Looks good so far! Landing-Gear-Lights still green and no strange sounds!! Save on ground at Orbost! I think I see an Austrian DC3 on the ramp ! Her name is „Erika“ Jodeldüüüü...! Little bit narrow here! Day one in GAAR 2018 is done - almost! (see below..!) First GAAR 2018 BB’Q-Party!! Now! I know what is all about this heavy goods in Jazzthoms aircraft! I guess most of the liquors stores around Hobart are empty! Folks! have you ever tried a nice and cold Austrianbeer "a Frastanzer"? or a Swissbeer "Quöllfrisch hell"? This is your chance!! See you next leg..!

Things never turn out the way you expect! A grey and rainy day for our GAAR Flight-Leg 2 further up to Narrandera.
Jazzthom has packed his belongings – up and away..! (I promised him to make a nice picture for his family album.) To be sure that I can fly safely above the highest peaks on my route, I have checked the MEF very accurate! Findings: 6500ft AMSL is OK for an anuncritical travelling! Ready for deaparture on runway 07 Wind : 180°/10kt (9kts from the right and some tailwind with 3kts) I’m fine with that! OK then.. take off power! Safely airborn and on heading 327° inbound to Corryong NDB. Not too bad, considering the clouds! Overflying the Snowy-River-Nationalpark. Within the park is the Little River Gorge. Victoria’s deepest gorge, descending 610 metres! The Cobberas Range, a mountain range that is a part of the Great Dividing Range within the Victorian Alps. Approaching the Davies Plain Ridge.. The Ridge has an elevation of 1673 metres (5489ft) and is the highest peak on my route!! .. comfy eh? I had hoped to see the Murrumbidgee-River and other nice landmarks.. no chance! Nevertheless, it’s time to think about my descent! OK, down to 1800ft.. .. further down to 1100ft, left base runway 14.. .. and turning into final runway 14 Dismal prospect...! Any airport here? Explorer Charles Sturt is credited with being the first European to observe this area in 1829. Narrandera today marks the transition between an extensive dry-land area, devoted to cereal crops, sheep and wool production – and very important: wine grapes!! So far so good - but still no airport insight! Finally oriented for runway 14, Headwind 8kts and some wind from the right 6kts All green in my clockmaker-office, here I go! Safely back on earth.. not too bad! Aha! Jazz-soiree with Thom! Surprise action, I already can see a tent and a smoking grill - I have a clue! Narrandera Airport is a small regional airport and during WW2 a station for the Royal Australian Air Force – and once a year, a drag racing event holds here! Oh!! Red-Snapper from the grill! Brilliant idea!! This is what I call.. a convivial, enjoyable and cool GAAR 2018 Jazz-BBQ-Evening! As a matter of fact! Cheers and See ya!

LEG#4 Australian Air Force asked. since this leg passed through a training area, would I test a new air to ground missile for compatibility with older equipment . NO warhead, just sensors ,and a Tech. riding with me. Going to burn some fuel this leg to make up for the route change. Demonstrated STOL take off at MUDGEE The GAAR turn point made a good IP turn to enter the range. Rockets away, target , the bridge over the river. on to MUNGINDI
