As a test run, I did a flight plan using the Vimy route (Flight Plan "B"), in a Convair CV240. The longest leg is 2:15 minutes, average speed is estimated at 260KTAS. Very doable for me, so I think that's what I'll fly.
Will this be a flight against the clock, like the GAAR? Or something like the flights we did way back in the dark ages, like the summer (July 2006, or was it 2007) flight from Tillamook to St. Thomas, where we made the flight with a start date, but no end date?

An excellent post Gunk.
Using real world weather would certainly make your flights very interesting, sounds great.
Those flying plan A will have to keep a record of their split times then submit their total for the leg in there Pirep. Stopover airports in plan A are not compulsory, they are for your convenience only.
I am currently writing an information sheet to send to Allan once the GAAR has finished to put on the Bluegrass web site and suggest that we keep this forum open till the start of the rally..
I do not want to give to much route information away at this stage but will post the basic route on here for perusal shortly

Here is the basic route, this could vary as the compiling continues.
Farnborough, Lyon, Pisa, Rome, Taranto, Crete, Cairo, Syria, Baghdad, Basra, Bandar Abbas, Karachi, Delhi, Allahabad, Calcutta, Akyab, Rangoon, Bangkok, Singora, Singapore, Kalidjati, Surabaya, Bima, Atamboea, Darwin.
No doubt there will be some name changes in todays world but Mr Google can sort that out as I go along.
Cheers Rob

Rob, Been checking the 1919 route against P3Dv4, and found out that some airfields or landings areas were unknown to LM's latest opus... Nothing to be found at Ramadi, although IATA code XTM. Nearest obviously ORAT or OR0Q. Kalidjati (WRKA) or Atambua (WIIK) do not exist into P3D, only NDB's, resp. OZ and AA. My Planner estimate (C-47 to be used here) is about 9000 NM. Been flying the London-Melbourne Air Race in 2004, but the 1919 Air Race would also be a real challenge! Blue skies, mate! Philippe

Philippe
I am using P3 v4 compiling the plans so do not worry. All flights are test flown by me for each of the three flight plans and Navaids checked.
The route I posted earlier is basic, there will be variations to accommodate the sim platform, other sim platforms I do not know as I only have P3 these days, that is something I am going to have to discuss with Allan once the GAAR is finished.
Thanks for your comment, most appreciated.

Thanks for the info Allen
We will have to use some alternates along the way, this will be sorted as the planning progresses, it is know small task but enjoyable.
One thing I am happy with is there appears to be a fair bit of interest in this rally, so please get out what information you have so far to your sim friends and other VA's that you may have involvement with.
Appreciate all the comments, keep them coming

I think we should do this as one big race, but because of it being 27 legs and trying to give a little time for each leg to be completed, if started in November we're looking at completing sometime in January, so I think that'd be a perfect setup because it'd still give a couple months until GAAR 2020 (if it is in March again) so everyone can rest and prepare for it.

We are actually planning on starting in September with test flights and registration in August, so you may fly anytime once you have completed your test flight and registration, there are no specified flight dates like in the GAAR.
This gives all plenty of time for flying without interfering with your normal life and commitments.
All we are asking is that Pireps be submitted when completing each leg and they will be accepted from 01 September till 20 December, if you wish to start your flights before those dates as many do flying the GAAR that is fine, just hold on to your Pireps until 01 September and then submit them.
Cheers Rob

This sounds very interesting. I'm sure there will be a strong BAV contingent joining in. Look forward to taking part.

Guys, need a little help here,
I am using P3D v4.4 for doing the flight plan for the rally. One of our ports of call is Baghdad Intl ORBI which I have the Nav charts for, VOR/ DME, ILS etc but putting the listed frequencies into the aircraft gives no navigation response. I am guessing the frequencies for this airport are not in the sim data base
Could some of you kind pilots out there check your sim and see if there is a response and if any, on what frequencies.
Thanks and cheers Rob

Rob, At my side, stock P3D4.4 navaids database without any upgrade, all navaids OK. I have used FSTramp to display them
VOR = BGD 110.6 DME = BAD 116.1 ADF = BD 277.0, BL 290.0, BM 260.0, MM 324.0, BH 360.0 ILS = YIB 110.9, YIA 110.3 + YD 110.7, YC 110.1 Scenery area 0702 Files NVX07020 and APX59200 Did you update your navaids database (Hervé Sors file for instance)?
Blue skies Philippe

Thanks Philippe, you have come to my rescue once again, found the MJ C-47 on SOH also.
Shall do a proving flight again using those frequencies, they are entirely different to those available on the Internet
Much appreciated.

Philippe,
I am using the latest Navigraph and cross reference with the available Jeppesen charts.
The available Jepp charts are 2016 which I did not notice at the time giving the confusing frequencies so the frequencies must have changed since that date, first time I have encountered this.
I did not know about the Sors files, very interesting, thank you.
