Murray Island, Feb 25th 2015 ~2pm
Yep Deltahotel - we may all overstay!! Whilst I'm relaxing in my hammock (AUD$ 10 per day for rental!!!) I heard a well known C-117 engine sound.. So I quicky grabbed my binocular - and - Yep, it was Thom approaching Murray Island from the northwest for runway 14! I sent off a radio message, that no kangaroo is on the runway and he may land at own decision! Wind: 070/08KT There he comes - he is doing very well! Some rubber dust - and a pinpoint landing! Slam on the brakes Thom - only a few hundred feet runway here! - Wow! - that looks after HOT BRAKES!!! Crazy fella, he stopped after 200m! - Sure instinct for parking..
.. as the apron is really tight! Well then - I caught two big Barras.. (you folks guess right) It's BBQ-time! But first: Good to have you back on the rally Thom! CHEERS

A pretty aeroplane en-route Gove. Approaching Gove. It's a bit hazy. With a bit of assistance from the VOR, there's Gove On the ground at Gove. A long, surfaced runway.

GAAR 2015 Flight 6 Murray Island to Coconut Island After a festive and brief rest on Murray Island (a painful sunburn incl.) its time to continue the GAAR 2015 adventure. I learned that landing on Coconut Island is to be compared like to land on a aircraft carrier! Well then! On the way to active runway 14. TOW: 11 tons including the just needed cargo! Sorrowful I face up to this short runway – 529 meters only! Setting full power!! Take-off roll until the end of runway 14 – I only trust in thrust!
The engines are roaring and the whole aircraft trembles, including me! Thankfully I can trust to this strong engines – so I gain quickly a save altitude. Adios Murray Island! On my left, Wyer Island (looks like a horseshoe) and Dowar Island. They both belong to the Murray Island group. Reaching my cruising altitude of 3500ft AMSL – the next 20 minutes just relaxing and and marvel to that remarkable Torres Strait scenery! Approaching my base leg entry point in descent to 1000ft AMSL - Coconut Island is insight! Left base runway 09.. .. and keeping a stiff upper lip! Wow - look at this slip indicator! The wind, the wind, the heaven-born wind! Full flaps – all set for landing! It really looks like an aircraft carrier-landing-platform! A nasty Cross Wind Component from the left with 8kts. Made it! I’m proud of me!! Check after landing and an easy backtrack.. .. to the apron! I sort of expected it.. GAAR-Officials! (paper and pencil at hand)…!

leg 6 YMUI - YCCT I slept long and had a crazy dream: I met Urs an a (few) bottles of champaign.....but nobody here besides me and my bird, waiting for sturtup after a wonderful breakfast with fresh bananas and pineapples.... my cockpit in this wonderful area and the old pic of my daughter with her dog at the ASI on the left makes me smile.....wish she were here.... okay....let's go and find Urs.... starting up 1 and 2 damn'd short runway....but the tail is up, flaps at 2nd position, engines full throttle and hoping for lift off.... yeah.....good old lady........airborn again could not resist to cast an eye at the fantastic horseshoe.... there she flyes.... directly towards Coconut...... another shorty.....and shear winds....so reduce speed as much as possible, full flaps, gear down and aiming at the threshold,....fingers crossed looks good...... wheening brakes ( fresh setup..... ;-)) parking position at the BBQ on one side ....A N D....... what a surprise::::::: Urs at the other:::: !!!!

Extravaganza picture-album from the GAAR 2015 so far! - Great job !!! Thanks to all!! GAAR 2015 Flight 7 Coconut Island to Warraber IslandJust a short brake at Coconut Island! A request from the GAAR-Officials: “Would it be possible to accept a small cargo to Warraber-Island, it’s only a 200kg wooden box!?” Whew! my TOW would amount to 11.4 tons again. I quick calculate my take off distance and find out, I need 725 meters for take off. Coconut Island is running a 750m runway. I accept this cargo, warm-hearted as I’m!! Cargo loaded and secured, mile-long checklist and #1 is alive again! Thom just departed - runway is clear – my turn now! On the way.. .. to the active runway. Parking-brakes set and engine adjustment for take off power. Once more, I trust in thrust and in my t/o-distance calculator! It works! (Heaven can wait!) That was tight!! – but I’m blissfully happy in the air! Cruising altitude 2500ft AMSL on – its just a short flight, 8’ or so! Left downwind for runway 12 and Warraber Island is insight on my upper right. Base leg – nice, some ships around! It’s a bumpy approach.. .. and I calculate a Cross Wind full from the left with 11kts. I have a word for this kind of flying: PITA!! I don’t translate it!! Uh-huh, I have some spectators on the beach - keep one’s head down! Thom survived as well!! At least on ground and wondrously, a good time! Turning back and travelling to the ramp. The wooden box is offloaded and I think – we need a cup of coffee!

jazzthom, if you only buy one more book in your life, get Fate is the Hunter, and keep it by your bedside. Ernest Gann lived and breathed early flying.
Now, do I wait for the smog to dissipate, or just follow your smokescreen to the next place?
