Any scratches on the wingtips after landing? Wingtips fine Urs. Passengers twitchy though. I may have trimmed tree tops at the far end on take-off. Timing better than expected - not much room for any adjustments from that approach. Dave H

Just to show the old 'tross is no slacker, here's the departure from Badu Island. Climb at 80 mph (70kts) until clear of the trees. Yes, well below Vmca, but Perf A wasn't invented then. End of the day; parked at Boigu. (psst...beers anyone?)

GAAR 2015 Flight 1 Horn Island to Badu Island Airport of Horn Island in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia! The first day in the GAAR 2015 and as you can see, there are two Douglas C-117 participating the rally! The one above belongs to Thom – I don’t know where has he got to? Thom! – the rally starts!!! After a careful attention to my flightpreparation, I’m about to taxi for runway 08 – I’m quite nervous, but the happy folks you see in the back, applauds for a warm farewell! There’s nothing like a real Australien BBQ! A short backtrack to the active runway. I own 4100lt of gasoline and 1 ton of cargo for Badu and Yam Is. My TOW amounts to 12.6 tons. This is my office for the next days – very handy clocks and instruments at hand. Mile-long check-list is processed.. .. and setting the power for take-off. 45” MAP and 2500 RPM – here I go! Easy and keep one’s shirt on! Like a Space Shuttle – 900 FPM equal to 120-130 KIAS. On course 347° to my next waypoint. Just a short hop. Reaching my cruise altitude, 3500ft AMSL and reducing to targetspeed 194kt GS Barely in the air, I already have to think about the approach and landing. Moa Island in front of me. Overhead Moa-Airfield I start my descent to 1000ft AMSL for runway 30 Badu Island! 5 miles out on 1000ft AMSL – landing runway 30 is in sight. All set in the cockpit – runway is clear. What a welcome, they let off a firework! Crazy this islanders! Whew, management by perception! 973m runway only! Accurate landing – slam on the brakes! 1.26 over target time. Not bad, but I have to make it better. I used halve way of the runway only – I made some modifications to the brakes.. Backtrack. A tiny island, a tiny airfield. A shortcut direct to the apron. Not much space here and a dusty affair! Gosh, a GAAR-party! I would like to partake, but I have to go on! Well, I take a cup of coffee….

GAAR 2015 Flight 2 Badu Island to Yam Island It’s time to start the engines again for flight number two. I just studied the aerodrome infrastructure of Yam Island and I find out, the landing strips becoming shorter. So I’m not unhappy that I could offload some kilos of cargo here. But still, my TOW amounts to 11.7 tons – lining up on runway 30. Wind: 041°/10kt On the brakes and setting take-off power. This time, full MP and full RPM. (Must be very painful for the engines). But it’s only until I’am clear of the obstacles in front of me. This islanders are still celebrating while I try to gain speed! Close to the opposite threshold finally airborne.. the wind is pushing me out of runway heading! A last colourful big bang – adios amigos! I release my engines from pain and reducing MP and RPM for climb speed. What the heck? Seafog? It was a short fear – checking my clocks, just to make sure! En route on 3500ft AMSL. Thats Torres Strait ! Blue, bluer, bluest! Nobody else on the freq. In descent to 1000ft, reaching my fix 5NM out of runway 11 Short final runway 11, all set for landing – hold one’s nerve! Precise landing – but 1.56 over target..! At least my brakes are in good shape..! – turning back to the apron. Somebody is waving at me – aviation authority? I have nothing to fear from! No worries! GAAR 2015 supervisors on duty! Some more cargo goes off here!

GAAR 2015 Flight 3 Yam Island to Boigu It looks like that all islanders here are in BBQ mood! After a short break, firing up engine #1 TOW: 11.3 tons – It does little to reduce stress! Antoher full power take-off setting. 2x 1’475 hp are roaring! Engines, I beg your pardon! At least, in the air! To avoid some wood – resolute deviation to the left! And left again for heading 311° Bye bye Yam Island and thank you for welcoming! Grey affair! 3500ft on course! On my right, Dauan- and Saibai Island. Top of descent! Boigu Island in front. I can see the airport at one o’clock.. As usual 5NM out, – turning for final runway 09. Headwind 6kt I slowly become accustomed to short runways. Aiming point just after the threshold! Nailed the landing, but not the time! +1’.58’’ Good news – a GAAR 2015 BBQ party! Good organisation Allan! Thank you! No space on the apron – trying to find a parking spot! Sorry for the dust – propeller blast. Last cargo goes off – and for sure, I don’t load any! Night stop at Boigu! Hope they have a cold stubby or two! Awaiting my flight-mate Jazzthom for grilled crayfish, salad and some Chardonnay!!

Lined up at Boigu. What a stupid place to plant trees!!!. Or a stupid place to make a runway. Still, the STOL 'tross can make it. Believe it or not, rotating just here manages to clear the trees. Sabai Island. I guess it's high tide. Still chocked after the "de-fuelling" stop.

GAAR 2015 Flight 4 Boigu to Saibai Island After a nice and festive rest here in Boigu, ready to go on for flight number 4 10am local time.. another fine day for flying! A short backtrack to the active runway 09 Still 3200lt gasoline in the tanks and 6 drums of gasoline to retain. 11 tons for take off! Again, poor engines! Well folks, you no the story. At least it ……! Going up for 2500ft AMSL only! Saibai Island in sight – twelve o’clock. Slowly but surely, I feel very comfy in my cockpit! Following the coastline of western PNG. Inbound to my fix and overflying a container ship. Looks good – all set for landing on runway 12 The landing, a bit tricky – crosswind 50° from the left, 8kts. but finally, I nailed the time! A small minus of 0.55’’ Once more, no space on the apron – parking spot on grass! A blue-white tent in the back? Yes, a cup of coffee please! No cargo and fuel needed!

Urs, Yes, thank you my friend, got the C-117 and the C-47. The 117 appears to have a clearer panel than the 47, both fly great but cannot get the GPS screens working on either aircraft. Any ideas on that ?
Cheers now Rob

To Rob, Perfect! Activate both GPS by a right-mouse click on the "C"-knop on the upper left side. Brighter by more right mouse clicks, darker by left mouse klicks. Cheers Urs
