leg3
when I am flying the GAAR I always make some research for more information,...... as it always was a dream for me to live in Australia since I was a kid,...so nowadays I only can dream of a visit once in my life....
so I show you some pics what made me dream of this country ( if I do not bore you to much....)
We are all preparing leg 3 and have to wait till the scheduled flight for these passengers is done...see the girl I brought over here?!
Air Queensland.....
although humid, its really hot....
they pack the DC3 with all the stuff which has to be transported to Cairns
humidity pretty high,...maybe some rain expected,.....passengers boarding....
boarding completed
checklist done
engines startup
and taxy to rwy
cockpit view to Urs in his C119,...very silent over there? He's waiting for new tires or brakes, I've heard...
anyway, Air Queensland DC3 has to leave....just when the rain comes back
speakers on: volume up.....
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxs3jGy9k9wthose days with the DC3 s were a dream....
just enjoy....
ok let's concentrate on our own....the rallye has not yet ended....
we wanted to help Urs, but you now....he's a selfmade guy,...so a short wink and a smile and we' ll meet again....good luck with your Boxcar!
....and your "lidddddle" headache....
we just feel like in the days of Air Queensland ....
a last radio call,..."cheers Swiss cowboy"
"see you later...."
ready to go....
throttles forward.....
take off....
up....up....and...
away!
low cloud ceiling....
and rain....no shine....
gives us time to dream..... ( cautious of course )
thinking of the ancient Boeing 314 clipper who took the long way round the world in 1941 who didn't have modern navigation equipement...
a recommendable book for flight enthusiasts!!!
www.amazon.com/Long-Way-Home-Ed-Dover/dp/061521472Xanyway we have a good look at the northern barrier reef (another dream....deep sigh....)
in remembrance of Capt. Ford and the Pacific Clipper we try to navigate old style , without GPS;...just clock and compass,....makes it worth the long leg.....
the horizon seems to be non existent.....
just clouds, gray, some blue and roaring engines....
its more than an hour by now....should we check GPS???....no way,...this makes the fun!!!
all in one,...we found the coastline about 15 miles west from Port Moresby,...not to bad for a blind flight...lol....so a last turn right and within a few minutes on long final
good to have a rwy ahead....lol...
flaring....
towers view
keeping up speed.... (target time ....)
although having made a 360 in approach, we need the whole runway to get a good target time as we were a little early ( nervous without GPS and a little higher speed...lol) but not to bad, just 0.14 ahead...the runway was just a little short...
space enough for all of us,....and the mandatory BBQ tent ahead...lol
we seem to be first....magnetic thrust to the beerbar...
parking position
perfect catering....how I love these rallyes....
at the end of the day, everything turned out well, even Urs found his way....and we have another surprise...
jazzthoms band had a ride from Europe to make the night turning to day...
ENJOY!
