leg 2a
thanks for all the newsletter entries from Wayne, macconnell, Shorty and Urs....
preparing for leg 2a from Cooktown to Lockhart via Coen airfield...
Urs seems to just "tumble" back from the BBQ tent as he sat there the whole night
hopefully he is able to fly....seems that he did some packing early in this morning......
we have to turn my bird to refuel as I had only few on board to test the flight abilities during leg1
busy ground handling
refuelling here, calling for pushback there....
pusback attatched.....
in position for engine runup
fuel filled up to the ceiling...... ( the two Wright Cyclone radials seem to swallow like two cows.... for God's sake I'll pay in virtual cash...lol
)
Urs ready to fly,...taxying out with the typical roar of the Wright R-3350 Cyclone 18 cylinder engines
time to startup our bird....
still some oil burning....maybe I'll find some time to check this enroute....
taxying to 29....
love this view....in anticipation of this next run....chasing Urs....
takeoff
gear up, flaps and cowl flaps to cum....
what a lovely day!!!!

....in the blue
such a lovely day......perfect for flying
come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away...
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away
If you can use some exotic booze
There's a bar in far Bombay
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away
Come fly with me, let's float down to Peru
In llama-land there's a one-man band
And he'll toot his flute for you
Come fly with me, let's take off in the blue
Once I get you up there
Where the air is rarefied
We'll just glide
Starry-eyed
Once I get you up there
I'll be holding you so near
You may hear
Angels cheer, 'cause we're together
Weather-wise, it's such a lovely day
Just say the words and we'll beat the birds
Down to Acapulco Bay
It is perfect for a flying honeymoon, they say
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away
Once I get you up there
Where the air is rarefied
We'll just glide
Starry-eyed
Once I get you up there
I'll be holding you so near
You may hear
Angels cheer, 'cause we're together
Weather-wise, it's such a lovely day
You just say the words and we'll beat the birds
Down to Acapulco Bay
It's perfect for a flying honeymoon, they say
Come fly with me, let's fly let's fly
Pack up let's fly away

let's dim the music now and concentrate on this cruise...
one flight of the Phoenix
river meanders like a serpent.....
North Kennedy river
Kulla National Park Range
left wing abeam Coen in the background...
aproaching along the 81 Peninsula Developm. Rd. across Mungkan Kandju National Park
in landing configuration
turning to final
on papi glideslope...
concentrated on...
...touchdown zone
seems to be a non frequent airstrip...lol...more bushes and gravel than pavement....but that's the C119 stays for....
not spectacular....
but: refreshing time for the short stopover!!!!! it's incredibly hot out here....94°F on the panel...means 34° Celsius....
conveniant parking place......short stopover, noting the time, stretching the legs and swallowing some fresh water ( cooling system overflow...lol...)
I must have overtaken Urs, cause he is not here so far.....let's find a better parking place to wait for him....
I thought not to wait here alone,...but this guy wants to leave before the front system comes up....
okay....let's await Urs and his roaring Boxcar:
Coen 'Passenger Terminal' - 1967
The 'Passenger Terminal' at Coen, on Cape York in far north Queensland, in August 1967 was a pretty rudimentary affair although quite well kept. Note the flagpole flying the Civil Air Ensign. The occasion of this photo was probably navaid checks as the aircraft is DCA's airways survey Fokker F.27 Friendship VH-CAV.

what's this black front in the background??? Thunderstorms upcoming??
if someone wants to leave: take this schedule:
